The widely accepted data format for scientific data would facilitate the interoperability between simulation codes to a great extend. The aim of this topic is to collect existing standards.
Just to start with a few (open) standards for storing mesh data and results:
  • The CFD General Notation System (CGNS) provides a general, portable, and extensible standard for the storage and retrieval of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis data - cgns.github.io/
  • eXtensible Data Model and Format (XDMF) - www.xdmf.org/index.php/Main_Page
Both are based on standardized low-level data format, such as XML and HDF5.
