The Department of Ferrous Metallurgy (IEHK) is an integrative steel education, research and development department spanning from metallurgy over processing to final application and various failure and corrosion topics. Within IEHK, the working group Material Simulation primarily focuses the modeling of microstructures and of mechanicaltechnological properties in semi-finished products and components. Integrated microstructure-based modeling based on thermodynamic-kinetic and thermomechanical approaches is used for the quantitative evolution and correlation of microstructure and mechanical properties to systematically design alloys and processes. The Institute of Metal Forming (IBF) is active in the development and optimization of processes and process chains related to metal forming, comprising sheet and bulk metals as well as long and flat products. An additional topic is the development of methods for materials modeling and process simulation. At the IBF empirical as well as microstructure based approaches linking material models at different scales are developed and used to simulate various forming processes. The experimental facilities at the IBF allow for the characterization of the deformation behavior of metals and for the validation of process simulations with real-life experiments.

The role of RWTH in ICMEg mainly is the coordination/networking of industrial users of ICME and the specification of sand-box scenarios. RTWH will also lead the  dissemination.
